Hi friends. In case you didn’t know this about me, I am a cat fan x1000. So, I am embracing my cat loving heart this year by drawing portraits of many of these magical creatures from my beloved community.
Cats, to me, are wild, independent and affectionate creatures. In my experience, they often help humans to practice much needed relationship skills. I think they require that we learn about negotiating interdependence. They teach us to practice power with each other not power over each other. They show us that we can build a sense of family in many different ways. They teach us how to play. They often attune to our nervous systems when we are dysregulated and offer to co-regulate with us with purrs, head butts, “making biscuits”, etc. They can teach us that it’s ok to have boundaries and express our needs. They often give us the unconditional love that may have been missing in other connections. I feel grateful to have lived parts of my life alongside these incredible animal friends. I’ve learned so much with them about life and even death. I learned how to be more present for it all and I’m sure the way I move through the world has been deeply shaped by the gifts of connecting with cats.
As you see these calendar illustrations this year, I invite you to think about animals you have known. What parts have they played in your life? What have you learned about yourself and others because of your relationship with them?
I’m sending you a huge dose of wildness, interdependence, and affection through the cat art I’ve worked on for this upcoming year. I hope it offers a soft landing amidst all the things going on in our world.
